We know from experience that implementing generative AI within the public sector can be met with caution and fear from both internal stakeholders and community partners. We’ve found that its critical to take a co-creation and trust-building approach to be successful, bringing together a variety of voices into safe spaces that allow folks to express themselves as well as receive a formal introduction to the capabilities and limitations of this new technology. People needs onboarding to the potential uses of generative AI with a clear overview of how it works, how to identify its risks and get access to examples of successful use cases.
Implementing generative AI technologies in alignment with public sector goals will take time. We recommend a set of strategies that will help bring stakeholders together, identify applicable use cases and support a more equitable process.
Align with local stakeholders on best practices
Bringing everyone to the table in the beginning of any local effort will help you build trust and foster a sense of co-ownership based on a set of shared values.
Support the responsible application of generative AI
Providing third-party vendors with robust documentation and incentives for building things responsibly help to ensure a consistent approach.
Ideate on issues that directly affect marginalized communities
Involving community partners in the design and creation of solutions that directly affect them can lead to increased adoption and immediate value.
